What effect do UV rays have on our skin?

As much as we want to enjoy the sun's rays, we must remember to do so safely. UV rays not only stimulate vitamin D production and increase serotonin – the happiness hormone – in the body, but also have a positive effect in treating inflammatory skin conditions. However, an excessive amount of UV rays is dangerous – it promotes premature skin aging, the appearance of wrinkles, pigment spots, and rosacea, causes sunburn, and contributes to the development of skin cancer.

UVB rays affect the outer layer of the skin (epidermis); these rays give the skin a darker tone, but they are also responsible for sunburn. Long-term exposure to these rays disrupts collagen regeneration processes, thereby promoting skin aging and the formation of wrinkles.

UVA rays penetrate deeper into the inner layer of the skin (dermis). They promote hyperpigmentation and premature skin aging by breaking down collagen and elastin. Both UVB and UVA rays can cause damage to cell DNA, which increases the likelihood of skin cancer.

What is SPF?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. The number indicated next to these letters is an indicator of the strength of protection.

It is important to note that no product protects 100% from the sun. SPF15 will protect against 93% of UV rays, SPF30 - 97%, SPF50 - 98%.

The SPF indicator in sunscreens only refers to protection against UVB rays, so some creams only protect against sunburn. When choosing a sunscreen, it is essential to pay attention and look for information in the descriptions about protection against UVA rays as well.

What to look for in sunscreen ingredients?

In sunscreens, we can find mineral or chemical filters.

Mineral sunscreens (also known as physical sunscreens) form a physical barrier on the skin that protects against harmful UV rays. The action of mineral filters is mechanical – they do not penetrate the skin but remain on its surface and reflect UV rays. Physical filters protect against UVA and UVB rays. They do not cause allergic reactions and are suitable for sensitive skin. They are also especially suitable for children, pregnant, and breastfeeding women. These creams are usually thicker in consistency and may be harder to absorb into the skin.

Chemical filters penetrate the upper layer of the skin and, through chemical reactions, absorb UV rays, converting them into harmless heat. Most chemical filters protect against UVB rays, so when choosing such sunscreens, be sure to look for information about protection against UVA rays as well. These creams usually have a lighter texture, absorb faster into the skin, and spread more easily. Therefore, they are more suitable for daily use, especially when applying makeup.

When choosing a sunscreen for daily use, it is also useful to pay attention to other active ingredients in the product that can provide moisturizing, nourishing, or skin tone-evening effects.

When to use sunscreens?

It is recommended to use sunscreens every day, even when not directly exposed to sunlight. UV rays affect the skin both in summer and winter, and even on cloudy days when the sun is not visible.

Correct application of sunscreen is the main factor in protecting the skin from harmful effects. It is very important to apply a sufficient amount of sunscreen. For daily skin protection – incorporate sunscreens into your morning facial skincare routine. Sunscreens should be applied after skincare products and before makeup. It should also be remembered to reapply throughout the day. When at the beach or in nature, where we are exposed to direct sunlight, sunscreens should be reapplied at least every two hours. It is also essential to remember to reapply after swimming, sweating, or toweling off.
